Navigating Within a Test
Control how test-takers navigate through sections and pages for better test flow.
Test navigation settings determine how freely test-takers can move through sections and pages of a test. You can control navigation both at the test level (between sections) and at the section level (between pages within a section).
Where to find it:
Test-level navigation: Test Settings → Features tab → Navigation Control
Section-level navigation: Section Settings → Navigation Control
Navigation Options
The same three navigation modes are available at both test and section levels:
- Allow going forward & backward: This is the default setting. Test-takers can move freely between sections or pages—forward and backward without restrictions.
- Allow only going backward: Test-takers can go back to previously visited sections/pages but cannot jump ahead. Forward navigation follows a linear path.
- Don't allow going forward & backward: Test-takers can only move in one direction, progressing through the test or section without revisiting previous parts.
Test-Level Navigation (Between Sections)
You can control how test-takers move between sections of the test, in order to:
- Prevent skipping ahead to later sections
- Enforce linear section progression
- Allow review of previous sections when necessary
Section-Level Navigation (Within Pages)
You can control how test-takers navigate between pages within a section to achieve the following:
- Restrict backtracking within the section
- Enforce a specific page order, requiring test-takers to view pages sequentially
- Allow free navigation within a section, while restricting movement between sections.
