Question Properties

How to organize questions using folders, tags, labels, language, and status — and how the Schema enforces naming rules.

Updated 2026/06/09

Every question carries a set of organizational properties that are set when saving and used by the Question Bank Navigator to filter, sort, and browse your library.

Folder

Folders group questions by topic, department, difficulty, or any category that makes sense for your organization. Each question belongs to exactly one folder. Folders support sub-folders to any depth (e.g. "Math/Algebra/Quadratics"), and the navigator's folder picker displays the full tree with expand/collapse controls and question counts.

Folders are created on the fly when you first assign a question to them, or defined in advance via the Schema. You can mark a folder as your favorite (default) so it opens automatically when you visit the Question Bank.

Tags

Tags are key-value metadata attached to a question. For example: difficulty: hard, topic: algebra, source: internal, year: 2024. Tags enable precise, multi-condition filtering in the navigator — you can include questions with a specific value, include all questions that have a key set to any value, or exclude questions with a given value.

Labels

Labels are free-form strings for lightweight, ad-hoc classification. Unlike tags, they have no key part — just a word or short phrase such as needs review, exam-ready, or translated. Multiple labels can be assigned to a single question. The Labels filter in the navigator lets you scope the list to any combination of labels.

Language

You can mark the language a question is written in using an ISO 639-1 code such as en, tr, or de. Once set, the Language filter in the navigator lets you scope the question list to a specific language — useful for organizations that run assessments in multiple languages.

Status

Status tracks a question's readiness through a simple workflow:

  • Draft — the question is work in progress and not yet ready for use in tests
  • Review — the question has been submitted for quality review
  • Ready — the question is approved and can be included in tests

Status is set manually on each question. Use the Status filter in the navigator to monitor which questions need attention at any point in your review workflow.

Schema Enforcement

If your organization has a Schema configured (a premium feature), folder and tag assignments are validated at save time:

  • Strict folders — only folders defined in the schema are allowed
  • Required tags — certain tags must be present before the question can be saved
  • Strict tag values — tag values must match a predefined list

Schema enforcement ensures that all questions follow a consistent naming convention, which is essential for reliable filtering and reporting in large teams.
