Hint

How to add optional guidance that candidates can reveal during the test.

Updated 2026/06/03

A hint is optional guidance attached to a question that candidates can choose to reveal during the test by clicking a hint button. It is not shown by default — the candidate actively requests it.

What to Put in a Hint

  • A formula or reference value the candidate might need
  • A reminder of a concept or rule relevant to the question
  • A clarification of what the question is asking
  • A partial worked example to guide the approach without revealing the answer

What Not to Put in a Hint

The hint should not contain the answer or make the answer trivially obvious. Its purpose is to support the candidate’s thinking, not to substitute for it.

How to Add a Hint

In the question editor, find the Hint section and enable it. Write the hint content using the rich text editor — hints support the same content types as the question prompt (text, images, equations, etc.).

Whether the hint button is visible to candidates depends on the test configuration. You can choose to show or hide hints at the test or section level.
