Match
Candidates pair items from a left column with options from a right column using four layout modes and partial scoring.
A Match question asks candidates to pair items from one list with options from another. Each item on the left must be matched to one or more options on the right. Partial scoring is supported — each correctly matched pair earns points independently. Like Multiple Choice and Match also supports AI generation and paste from text.
Writing the Question
Write your question prompt using the content editor. The prompt should clearly explain the pairing task — what the left-hand items represent and what the right-hand options represent. Use sidebar layout to display additional context alongside the matching interface. See Content Editor and Layout.
Items and Options
- Items — the left-hand list. Each item is a prompt that candidates must match to an option. Items support rich content.
- Options — the right-hand list. Options are shared across all items — the same option can be the correct match for multiple items. Options also support rich content.
Layout Modes
Choose how the matching interface is presented to candidates:
- Dropdown — each item shows a dropdown selector. Clean and compact, works well on mobile.
- Inline options — options appear as clickable buttons next to each item. Fast and visual.
- Matrix — a grid with items as rows and options as columns. Candidates click cells to make matches. Best for comparing many items against the same set of options.
- Drag and drop — candidates drag option cards onto item slots. Engaging and intuitive.

Scoring
Each correctly matched pair contributes a percentage to the overall success rate, which is multiplied by the question’s point multiplier. Partial scoring is built in — a candidate who gets 3 out of 4 pairs correct earns 75% of the points. Effects can also be attached to individual matches as side bonuses or penalties. See Scoring — Multipliers & Dimensions.
Matching Constraints
Set minimum and maximum matching constraints to control how many options each item can be matched to. Set to 1 for a classic one-to-one matching question.
