What is Shuffling?

Shuffling is a feature that allows you to randomize the order of test content—including sections, pages, questions, and even answer choices—to ensure that each participant receives a uniquely ordered test. This helps increase test security and reduce the risk of answer sharing among participants.

TestInvite provides multiple layers of shuffling in exams:

Shuffling Sections

Where to find it: Test Settings → Questions tab → Shuffle Sections

When enabled, this setting randomizes the order of sections in a test. Each participant will encounter the sections in a different sequence.

This is ideal for tests with independent sections where order does not affect comprehension.

Shuffling Pages (within a Section)

Where to find it: Section Settings → Shuffle Pages

This option randomizes the order of pages within a specific section. Activating this ensures each participant receives a different flow within that section.

Useful for modular sections where pages can be tackled in any order.

Shuffling Questions (within a Page)

Where to find it: Page Settings → Shuffle Questions

Activating this feature randomizes the questions on a page. You can still fix the position of certain questions while allowing others to shuffle around them.

This allows for a balance between control and randomness—ideal for preserving contextual flow while preventing predictability.

Shuffling Answer Choices (within a Question)

Where to find it: Question panel on the right →  Edit button → Shuffle choices

Most question types (including Multiple Choice Questions) support randomizing the order of answer choices, which helps prevent position bias.

This setting is configured directly within each question's settings.

Excluding Questions from Shuffle

You can fix the position of specific questions or exclude them from shuffling. This is particularly useful for:

  • Introductory or instruction questions
    • Anchor questions used for scoring calibration
      • Sequential logic-dependent items
Fixed questions are immune to shuffling and keep their position.
