Live Proctoring

Supervise an exam in real time with the Exam Monitor: a live candidate roster, live webcam and screen feeds, a real-time event stream, in-exam chat, and on-the-spot interventions like flagging, ending, or reinstating a session.

Live Proctoring opens the Exam Monitor — a fullscreen, real-time supervision surface for watching an exam as it happens. You see who is in the exam and where they are, watch their live webcam and screen feeds, follow every integrity event as it occurs, chat with candidates without interrupting them, and intervene on the spot: flag a suspicious moment, end a session, or reinstate a candidate who lost connection.

Connecting

Before monitoring starts, you configure the session:

  • Audience — monitor everyone, or narrow to specific groups, folders, or labels. Large exams can be split across several monitors (one per group) with different proctors watching each.
  • Primary identifier — how candidates are labeled throughout the monitor: full name, email, credential, unique ID, invitation code, or passcode.
  • Step — which exam step to monitor. Steps with recent session activity show a pulsing Active Sessions indicator, and the most recently active step is preselected for you.
  • Panels — the candidate roster is always shown; the Proctoring (live media) and Events panels are optional.

Returning to the connection screen keeps your previous configuration, so reconnecting after a change takes seconds. Once connected, each panel has its own gear menu for live-tuning its settings without disconnecting.

The candidate roster

The Audience panel is a live list of every candidate in scope. New candidates appear automatically; statuses flip in real time. Each row shows:

  • Session status — Pending, Starting (going through device checks), Started, or Completed.
  • Presence dot — online, idle, or offline, derived from the candidate's live browser activity. Thresholds are adjustable.
  • Position chip — where they are right now: in the workspace, entering the test (with the exact device-check step they're on), at a specific section and page, finished, or terminated.
  • Integrity chip — live lockdown signals: “Violation ×n” when they leave fullscreen or switch tabs, “Paste blocked”, and a sticky “Kicked out” when violation limits were exceeded.

Search, status filter chips, and sorting (by status, name, or join time) make it easy to find anyone in a large room. An info button per row opens the candidate's full detail card, including connection diagnostics like inactivity, connection issues, and webcam or screen-share interruptions.

The live media grid

The Proctoring panel shows the latest captured material for every candidate — webcam photos or video, screen captures, or both — one card per candidate, refreshing live as new material uploads.

  • Smart layout — the view mode (webcam, screen, or both) and card size adapt automatically to what the step records and how many candidates are present: a room of 10 gets large cards, a room of 200 gets a compact webcam wall. You can pin your own preference at any time.
  • Freshness dot — each card signals whether its material is fresh or going stale, calibrated to the step's upload cadence.
  • Stale filter — candidates with no recent uploads are hidden from the grid (default: last 5 minutes; adjustable up to 3 hours or off), keeping the wall focused on live activity.
  • Pagination — 50 cards per page, so even very large exams stay navigable.

Click a card (or the crosshairs button on a roster row) to focus one candidate: the grid becomes their full media timeline, updating live as new material arrives, with the ability to scroll back through everything captured so far.

Flagging moments in real time

In the focused timeline, proctors can add manual detections on any incoming photo or video — marking a moment as suspicious activity or cheating activity while the exam is still running. These flags are saved immediately and permanently:

  • They survive the post-exam AI analysis untouched — nothing a live proctor records is lost or overwritten.
  • They appear in the full session review alongside AI findings, each with its own audit trail (who flagged it, when).

The live event stream

The Events panel is a real-time feed of everything happening in the exam: session starts and finishes, answers saved, page navigation, timers expiring, lockdown violations, webcam and screen-share interruptions, inactivity, and connection problems. Filter by severity level (trace to error) and time window (1 hour to 3 days). Selecting a candidate narrows the stream to just their events — a complete play-by-play of one session.

Chat with candidates

Every roster row has a chat button that opens a docked, messenger-style window pinned to the corner of the monitor — deliberately not a popup dialog, so monitoring continues while you type. A notification sound (mutable) announces new candidate messages, unread counters appear on the roster, and conversations from candidates outside your current audience collect under “Other chats” so no message can go unseen. Chat can be toggled on or off live from the roster's gear menu.

Intervening — candidate operations

Select one or more candidates in the roster (or act on the focused candidate from the media panel) to run operations without leaving the monitor:

  • End test session — force-complete a running session.
  • Ignore / Accept result — override a completed session's validity.
  • Reinstate — give a candidate their session back. For one candidate, a full editor opens where you control exactly where they resume and with how much time; for many candidates at once, auto reinstate resumes each from where they left off with their remaining time computed automatically.

The menu shows live counts of how many selected candidates qualify for each operation; non-qualifying candidates are skipped and reported. Results reflect immediately in the roster — no refresh needed.

Minimize, don't close

Minimizing the monitor collapses it to a compact bar while keeping every live connection alive — the feed, events, and chat keep flowing while you work elsewhere in the app, and unread chat messages surface on the bar. Closing the monitor disconnects everything (a confirmation warns you and offers minimizing instead).

AI analysis is post-exam only — during the exam, you are the intelligence. Live proctoring is the human real-time layer: catch what needs immediate intervention, flag what looks wrong, keep candidates unblocked via chat. After the session completes, the AI systematically reviews the full recording, and both your live flags and its findings land in the same session review for the final verdict.
