You can build flexible fill-in-the-blank questions using various tools in TestInvite, such as multiple choice, short text, long text, numeric, composites, matching and multimedia answer options.
Option 1: Using a composite for multi-blank format
This is ideal when you want to show a text or media block as context, and you want to ask multiple questions based on it. Each question fills a specific blank.
Steps:
Navigate to Question Bank → Composites → + Add Content Group
Fill in the title and description and choose the folder.
Click Content Items → Add Item → Content and enter the fill-in-the-blank's context text.
Add the fill-in-the-blank's context as content text.
Click Save.
To enter the questions, click Add item → Create a question (e.g., multiple choice, matching, short text)
Enter the question text: (e.g., “Choose an option to fill the first blank.”)
Add answer options, set the correct answer and save.

Repeat for the second blank.

Once the questions are added and organized, save the composite.
👉 This format is useful for educational assessments with reading passages and related blanks.
Option 2: Direct question creation for single fill-in-the-blanks
Creating single-blank questions are quicker as you won’t need a composite. Here are some of the alternatives:
A) Multiple Choice
Go to Question Bank → + New Question → Multiple Choice.
Enter the question and the fill-in-the-blanktext into the question editor: (e.g., “Choose an option to fill the blank.”)
Add answer options, set the correct answer and save.
Example:
Single fill-in-the-blank question as MCQ.
B) Open-Ended
Choose Short Text or Long Text.
Enter fill-in-the-blankcontext (e.g., “One small step for man, one giant leap for _____.”)
Enter fill-in-the-blank context.
In this option, the test-taker types in the answer manually.

Option 3: Matching question format for fill-in-the-blank scenarios
If you have multiple blanks and want to keep things concise without using composites, the matching question format is an alternative.
Using the quick question creation tool, present the fill-in-the-blank statements at the top, and the question text items and matching options below and click "Apply".
Example:

Tips and Variations 👉 Image-Based Answers: Use image options instead of text (e.g., missing part is a flag, symbol, etc.) 👉 Audio/Video Cues: Reference content can be an audio or video file. 👉 Advanced Layouts: Use “Single Column” or “Two Columns” layout inside content groups for clearer formatting.
