LINEAR ON-THE-FLY TESTING

Unique exams for every candidate from the same blueprint

Linear on-the-fly testing assembles a different exam for each candidate in real time, selecting questions from your item bank according to a shared blueprint. Deliver secure, consistent, and scalable testing without manually creating separate exam forms.

What is LOFT testing?

Linear On-the-Fly Testing (LOFT) is a computer-based test delivery model that generates a unique exam for every candidate, assembled automatically from a shared item bank at the moment the test begins.

Unlike fixed-form exams, where every participant answers the same set of questions, LOFT selects items based on a predefined blueprint. Each generated form follows the same assessment structure, drawing from the required dimensions and question groups while using different items for each candidate.

The result sits between two familiar approaches. Like fixed-form testing, LOFT keeps exam structure consistent across candidates. Like adaptive testing, it gives each person a different version. But unlike adaptive testing, question selection does not change based on performance during the exam. Every candidate completes a linear test built from the same blueprint, but with a different set of questions selected for their exam.

HOW LOFT TESTING WORKS

From item bank to a unique, balanced exam in seconds

1

Build your item bank

Organize questions by topic, skill area, difficulty level, and other relevant attributes. A well-structured bank gives the system the flexibility to generate secure, well-balanced exam forms.

2

Define your blueprint

Specify the number of questions and the dimensions they should be selected from. The blueprint ensures each candidate receives a different form built to the same assessment structure.

3

Assemble exams on demand

The moment a candidate begins, the system selects the right items from the bank based on your blueprint. Each exam is generated automatically, instantly, and within all defined constraints.

Content Equivalence

Every test form follows the same blueprint, covering the same topics, skills, and question distribution, even when the individual items are different.

Candidate A and Candidate B receive entirely different questions, but both exams are built around the same assessment structure. The blueprint keeps every form aligned.

Difficulty Balance

Keep generated exam forms aligned in difficulty by drawing questions from predefined difficulty levels.

Candidates may receive different questions, but each form follows the same difficulty structure, supporting fairer and more consistent assessment delivery.

ADVANTAGES OF LINEAR ON THE FLY TESTING

Built for high-stakes, large-scale testing

Cheating resistance

No two candidates see the same exam. Answer sharing and item memorization become ineffective by design.

Instant generation

Tests are assembled in real time the moment a candidate begins. No manual form creation, no scheduling windows.

Scalable operations

Add new items to the bank at any time without rebuilding forms. The platform grows with your testing program.

Familiar scoring

LOFT uses standard linear scoring, not adaptive algorithms. Reporting and result comparison remain straightforward.

HOW LOFT COMPARES

Content equivalence High High Moderate
Security Low High Moderate
Scoring model Traditional Traditional IRT-based
Scalability Limited Very high High

WHEN TO CHOOSE LOFT

LOFT is the right fit when:

You want every candidate to receive a unique but equivalent exam

You need to prevent question sharing

You want results that are directly comparable across all forms

You plan to grow or update your item bank over time without rebuilding forms

You deliver high-stakes assessments where exam security and fairness matter

You test large groups continuously or on demand
